okay so I finally pulled the trigger on a Micasense RedEdge-P after like six months of going back and forth on it. mounted it on my M300 and flew my first couple of missions over a wheat field for a neighbor who farms about 800 acres. the data collection part went fine, got my ground control points in, processed everything through Pix4Dfields and got my NDVI and NDRE maps out the other side.

and now I have no idea what to do with them. like visually I can see there are stressed areas in the northwest corner of the field, and theres some obvious variability along one of the drainage tile lines, but how do I actually turn this into something actionable for the farmer. do I just hand him a PDF and say here are your problem zones good luck? feel like im missing the last mile of this whole thing.

the agronomist he works with is kind of old school and I dont think hes super excited about me showing up with drone maps. anyone been through this and figured out a good workflow for actually making these outputs useful to people who arent into the tech side of it at all?

the agronomist relationship is honestly the whole game here. i spent probably two years getting ignored or politely dismissed by agronomists before I found a couple who were actually curious about what the data could do. now I work directly with them on interpretation instead of trying to go around them to the farmer. makes the whole thing way more credible because the farmer already trusts their agronomist, so if the agronomist is vouching for what your maps are showing it lands completely differently than if youre just some guy with a drone.

for the deliverable itself, stop giving PDFs. get them into something like Ag Leader or even just a simple shapefile they can pull into climate fieldview or whatever platform the operation is already using. if you can overlay your stressed zone polygons on something the farmer already looks at every week youre halfway there. the NDRE is more useful than NDVI for nitrogen status in wheat by the way, worth making sure youre leading with that layer when youre talking to the agronomy side of things.

honestly same boat last spring, felt like I had all this data and was just staring at pretty colored maps. what helped me was just walking the problem areas with the farmer and having the map pulled up on my phone so we could ground truth it in real time. like you point at the map and say this red zone here, and then you walk over there and look at the crop together. that moment where the farmer goes oh yeah thats where we had the drainage issue three years ago ? that clicked for both of us and made the whole thing feel real instead of abstract. takes more time but it builds the trust way faster than any report.
