Looking to make the jump from my Cetus X to a proper 5" freestyle build and can't decide between DJI O4 or Walksnail Avatar systems. DJI is the top choice, followed by Walksnail, but I'm worried about future-proofing.

I've heard Caddx announced their new Ascent system and Walksnail firmware development has slowed down significantly in 2025. The DJI ecosystem seems more stable long-term, but the Walksnail hardware selection is impressive.

For someone planning to fly mainly freestyle with occasional long-range, which system offers better upgrade paths? Should I bite the bullet and go DJI O4 with Goggles 3, or is Walksnail still worth considering?

DJI is my top choice, followed by Walksnail, HDZero and analog. If you're coming from a Cetus X, the O4 system will blow your mind with image quality. Yes, it's more expensive upfront, but the ecosystem stability and resale value make it worthwhile.

I went Walksnail Avatar last year and don't regret it. Walksnail's biggest strength is its versatility with the largest selection of cameras and video transmitters among digital FPV systems. The slower firmware updates aren't necessarily bad - means the system is mature.

Honestly, for a first HD build I'd recommend starting with analog as a cost-effective starting point with low latency, then upgrading to digital later once you're more comfortable flying. Both DJI and Walksnail are overkill if you're still learning freestyle basics.
