Been researching my first 5" build and the math isn't adding up the way I expected. Looking at an iFlight Nazgul Eco BNF (~$179) vs sourcing individual parts for a similar spec custom build.

The days when BnF drones were significantly more expensive and lower-quality are gone - they're as good as anything the best builder would build, and often less expensive due to economies-of-scale. But when I price out frame + FC + ESC + motors + VTX + camera separately, I'm getting similar or sometimes higher costs.

Am I missing something here? Are there specific components where going custom actually saves money, or should I just grab the BNF and focus on learning to fly first? Custom built drones offer more flexibility while RTF and BNF kits offer convenience and instant ready-to-fly experience.

The real savings in custom builds come from upgrading incrementally and reusing parts between builds. Almost any prebuilt drone can be replicated by purchasing individual parts with similar overall expenses, so choose based on preference for convenience vs customization rather than cost alone.

You're not missing anything - BNF prices are competitive now. The advantage of building isn't cost, it's learning. Eventually you'll have to learn drone repair, and the best way to learn repair is to build it yourself. Start BNF, then build your second quad.

I thought the same thing until I factored in tools, spare parts, and inevitable mistakes. My first custom build ended up costing 40% more than planned between extra components and a replacement ESC after a wiring error. Learning to build can be incredibly frustrating and a lot of people give up before getting a taste of flight.
