finally pulled the trigger on a prebuilt, gonna regret this?

so ive been building my own quads for like 3 years now and always kinda looked down on prebuilts if im being honest. but i just dont have time anymore, new job, kid on the way, you know how it is. picked up a BetaFPV Aquila16 to just have something i can throw in a bag and fly without a 2 hour build session first.

anyway its been sitting in the box for a week because i keep reading mixed things about the factory tune on these. some people say its fine out of the box, some say it oscillates like crazy on fast rolls. has anyone actually flown one recently? im running a DJI O3 setup on my builds usually so also curious if its worth swapping the VTX or just flying with whatever they ship it with for now.

not trying to start a prebuilt vs scratch build war just genuinely curious what peoples experience has been with tuning these things after they arrive

I grabbed one a few months back in a similar situation. The factory tune is honestly not terrible for cruising around but yeah you'll notice propwash on hard deceleration, it's pretty evident. Spent maybe an hour in Betaflight tweaking D term and got it to a place I was happy with. The stock rates are also super slow, like whoever calibrated those must fly cinematics only.

On the VTX question, I left the stock one in for the first few packs just to get a feel for it and then swapped to O3 cause I had a spare unit. Worth doing if you already have O3 on your other quads just for the latency difference alone, but not urgent. The stock system flies fine for a casual session.

congrats on the incoming kid lol prebuilts make way more sense once life gets complicated trust me. i went the same route and dont regret it at all. one thing i noticed on mine was the motors were a little unbalanced from the factory, ran dynamic idle too low and got some weird behavior on idle drops. bumped it up a notch and most of the jello went away. probably worth checking that before you dive into PID rabbit holes
