ok so this might be a dumb question but im trying to figure out if i even need the part 107. i dont do any paid work, i just fly around parks and open fields on weekends mostly. my buddy keeps telling me i should get it anyway because it opens up airspace options and lets you fly in places you otherwise couldnt. but the studying looks like a lot and i heard the test is like $175 which isnt nothing

is there actually a practical difference in where you can fly day to day? like will i notice it being certified vs not. i fly a mini 3 if that matters

the main thing people dont realize is that recreational flyers are actually more restricted in some ways than part 107 pilots, not less. like as a rec flyer your basically locked into flying under FRIA approved sites or going through the LAANC system same as anyone else but with less flexibility. with 107 you can apply for waivers, fly in certain restricted airspace with authorization more easily, stuff like that. honestly even if you never plan to make money from flying the cert just gives you more options and you actually learn useful stuff studying for it. the weather and airspace knowledge is genuinely handy

i was in the same boat and put it off for like two years. finally did it and yeah it took a few weeks of studying but the test itself wasnt terrible. theres a ton of free material out there so the $175 testing fee is really your only cost. weather section tripped me up a bit but i passed first try with a 82 i think. for a mini 3 specifically youll probaly find you want LAANC access eventually anyway and having 107 just makes that smoother
