flying in wind ? when do you actually just land?

  • Members

so ive been flying my mini 3 pro for about 8 months now and wind is still the thing that trips me up the most. like i know the spec says it can handle up to something like 10.7 m/s wind resistance but that number means almost nothing to me when im standing in a field trying to decide if i should even bother launching.

had a situation last weekend where i was trying to get some footage of a trail and the gusts were probably inconsistent, calm one second then really pushing maybe 25-30 kph the next. the drone was fighting it pretty hard, image was shaky even with the gimbal doing its thing, and battery was draining noticeably faster than normal. ended up landing after like 6 minutes which felt like a waste of a drive out there.

my question is basically ? how do you all develop a feel for when conditions are marginal vs actually too much? do you use a wind meter or just eyeball it? and is there anything you can do technique-wise to make strong wind flying more manageable, like flying lower or adjusting expo settings or anything?

honestly the battery drain thing is your best real-time indicator imo. if im burning through way faster than expected in the first 2 minutes i just land, not worth pushing it. the rated wind resistance numbers are kinda misleading because thats sustained, gusts are a whole different animal and the controller does a lot of fighting that you never really see until your flight time tanks.

i do keep a little handheld anemometer in my bag, nothing fancy, a cheap one off amazon. its not super accurate but it gives me a ballpark and more importantly it helps me track gusts vs sustained. if gusts are more than like 50% higher than the sustained reading im already skeptical about going up.

technique wise ? flying lower does actually help a lot in my experience, the wind near the ground is usually more broken up but slower on average depending on terrain. also try to plan your route so youre flying into the wind on the way out and with it on the way back. you dont want to burn energy fighting the wind and then realize you have to fight it again to come home.

yeah same boat here, the inconsistent gust thing is way harder to deal with than steady wind. steady wind you can kind of plan around but gusts just randomly shove the thing sideways and if youre near anything that matters its stressful. i usually just look at the trees tbh, if branches are really moving and not just swaying im probably not flying. sounds dumb but ive found it pretty reliable
