how do you actually practice flying without just flying around aimlessly

this might be a dumb question but i feel like i hit a wall. been flying my mini 4 pro for like 4 months and i can get it up, move it around, land it fine. but every time i go out i kind of just... fly around? i dont really have a plan and i feel like im not actually getting better at anything specific. i see people on youtube doing really clean moves and i cant figure out how they got there, like was there a structured way they practiced or did they just fly a ton of hours and it clicked.

i tried doing figure 8s last weekend but i kept losing the orientation when the nose was pointed at me. is that just a time thing or is there a specific drill for it

the orientation thing when nose is toward you is genuinely the thing most people struggle with for way longer than they expect so dont feel bad. the drill that actually worked for me was picking a single cone or object and doing slow circles around it, starting with the nose always pointing away (so you always see the back of the drone) and then incrementally rotating until youre doing full tail-in passes and then eventually nose-in. do it slow, painfully slow, until your brain just flips automatically.

as for structure ? i started treating each session like i had one specific thing i was working on. not trying to improve everything, just like, today is only about smooth elevator pulls during a dolly out, or whatever. made a huge difference vs just flying around hoping to absorb something

honestly the aimless flying thing isnt as bad as you think for building hours, but yeah at some point you gotta give yourself constraints or youll just be comfortable-mediocre forever lol. i started stealing shot types from films i liked and then just trying to reproduce them. half the time i failed but i learned way more than open field freestyling. also simulators if youre on a budget for practice time, even for non-fpv stuff the muscle memory transfers more than people admit
