flying in wind ? at what point do you just call it a day

so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about 8 months now and wind is still the thing that messes with me the most. like i can handle light breeze no problem but once it starts gusting i genuinely dont know when to pack it up versus push through it. today it was probably 18-22mph steady with gusts hitting maybe 28 and i flew anyway and honestly the footage was fine but the drone was working hard the whole time and it made me nervous the whole flight.

my question is more about like how do you guys develop that feel for it. is it mostly just hours in the air or are there actual techniques you practice to get better at reading the wind and knowing your limits. i feel like ive read everything online but nobody really talks about the practical side of actually building that skill, they just say check the wind speed which yeah obviously but that doesnt help me feel more confident in marginal conditions

honestly the feel thing just comes with time, theres no shortcut i found. but what actually helped me was flying in progressively worse conditions on purpose ? like pick a day thats a bit gusty, go out somewhere open with no obstacles, and just hover. dont try to get shots, just watch how the bird responds, see where it wants to drift, get a sense of how much correction it needs. do that enough times and you start internalizing what 20mph actually feels like versus 30.

the other thing i started doing is watching the trees before i launch. wind speed readings are one thing but gusts are sneaky and the trees will show you what the air is actually doing at altitude if you watch for a minute before you arm. also learned the hard way that wind at ground level and wind at 100ft can be completely different situations, especially near terrain or buildings that create weird turbulence. 28mph gusts at your launch point might be 35+ up where youre flying.

im kinda in the same boat as you tbh, been flying about a year and wind still stresses me out more than it probably should. one thing that helped a little was switching to atti mode occasionally in calm conditions so i actually had to manually correct for drift ? it made me way more aware of what the drone is doing and less reliant on gps holding everything together. felt more like actually flying if that makes sense. havent been brave enough to do it in real wind yet lol
