so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about a year now and im still not great at reading wind conditions before i go out. like i'll check the forecast, it says 12mph, i think thats fine, then i get out there and its gusty as hell and my footage is garbage because the gimbal is fighting the whole time.

i know the rated wind resistance is like 27mph or whatever but that doesnt really mean anything in practice especially when its gusty versus steady. steady 20mph i can deal with, but 12mph gusts feel way worse somehow. is that just me or does everyone notice that. and how do you actually decide when to abort ? like is there a personal rule you use or do you just feel it out each time you go out

also side note im in the midwest so flat terrain, no trees or buildings to hide behind usually, just open fields and the wind does whatever it wants out here

gusty is absolutely worse than steady, youre not imagining it. the drone is constantly making micro adjustments and even if the footage looks okay in the moment you can sometimes see this subtle wobble that ruins shots. i fly a lot in coastal areas and ive basically stopped going out if the gusts are more than double the base wind speed ? like if its 10mph steady but gusting to 22, i pack it up. the math on that sounds weird but it comes from a lot of ruined cards honestly.

the other thing nobody talks about is wind at altitude vs ground level. sometimes it feels calm where youre standing and then you send it up 200 feet and its getting tossed around. i always do a quick climb to like 50 feet first and just hover for 30 seconds before i commit to anything. if it cant hold position cleanly i know its gonna be a bad day for serious work.

12mph gusts messing up footage sounds about right tbh. i had a similar thing happen last spring and i couldnt figure out why my video looked jittery even though windy.com said conditions were fine. turned out the gusts were way higher than the average they show. started using the hourly gust data specifically and that helped a lot more than just the average wind speed number
