so this has been bugging me for a while. i fly a pretty standard cruiser setup right now, mix of dji gear and some aftermarket stuff, mostly cinematic stuff but ive been wanting to get into fpv properly. my buddy keeps telling me to just build a freestyle quad and learn on a simulator first which yeah i get that but ive also been looking at the avata 2 because the whole integrated goggles and motion controller thing looks like it genuinely lowers the barrier to entry.

the thing is im not sure if its kind of a toy version of fpv or if its actually capable enough to grow into. like will i hit a ceiling with it fast? ive watched a ton of avata 2 footage and it honestly looks great but i also know dji smooths a lot of stuff out in post with their processing. anyone flown both a proper freestyle rig and the avata 2 and have thoughts? is it a gateway drug or is it kind of a dead end

not a dead end at all but your buddy isnt wrong either. the avata 2 is legitimately fun and the footage it produces is really solid, the stabilization is kind of insane actually. but if you want to do real freestyle ? like juicy proximity flying, power loops, that kind of thing ? you will outgrow it. the flight characteristics are very locked down compared to a real fpv quad, dji has governors on everything which is great for beginners but frustrating once you know what youre doing.

that said i know guys who fly avata 2 exclusively and make incredible content with it. depends what you actually want to do. if you want cinematic fpv style shots its a fantastic tool. if you want to learn to actually fly fpv the tradtional way, simulator plus a real quad is still the path

the motion controller is fun for like a week and then most people switch to a proper controller anyway just fyi. also worth knowing the goggles 3 that come with the avata 2 bundle work with other dji fpv gear too so its not totally a walled garden. price is the real issue imo, you can build a pretty capable freestyle quad for way less and use the goggles you already have if you have any
