so ive been watching fpv videos for like 6 months now and im finally ready to actually buy something but every time i start going down the rabbit hole i end up more confused than when i started. everyone seems to say build your own but then theres all these prebuilt options now that look pretty solid? like ive been looking at the DJI Avata stuff but people seem to kind of look down on it in the fpv community which i dont fully get. then theres BetaFPV and iFlight and Emax and i honestly cant tell the difference between any of them from the outside.

my main thing is i just want to fly, im not super interested in spending 3 months learning to solder before i even get in the air. but i also dont want to buy something that the community thinks is garbage or that im going to outgrow in like two months. budget is probably around $300-400 all in for a starter setup including goggles and controller if thats even realistic, maybe im way off on that

ok so the avata thing -- yeah people rag on it because its more of a cinematic cruiser than a real freestyle/racing quad, the flight controller is locked down and you cant really tune it or flash betaflight which is kind of the whole point for a lot of people. its not that its a bad product its just not really what most of the fpv community is doing.

for your budget and situation honestly id look at something like the BetaFPV Cetus Pro kit, it comes with the quad, goggles, and controller and its actually a decent way to start. the little whoop style quads are good for learning because you can crash them indoors without destroying your house or the quad. once you get comfortable with those the jump to a bigger 5 inch build makes way more sense and youll already understand the basics of betaflight by then. $300-400 is actually doable for a starter whoop kit, tight but doable.

the build your own argument is real but i think its more relevant once you know what you actually want out of the hobby, when youre starting out you dont even know what youre optimizing for yet

iFlight is probably the most popular prebuilt brand right now for 5inch stuff, their Nazgul series gets a lot of use. parts availability is decent and theyre not using super proprietary stuff so if something breaks you can usually fix it without buying direct from them. BetaFPV is more of a micro/whoop brand imo, they do make some bigger stuff but thats where they shine.

honestly though your $300-400 all in estimate for goggles controller AND quad is going to be rough if youre thinking 5inch. budget fpv goggles alone like the Eachine EV800D are like $60-80 but theyre not great, anything worth flying with regularly is going to eat a chunk of that. might be worth adjusting expectations or saving a bit more before jumping in
