took the drone hiking and genuinely didn't expect it to go this badly

ok so this is kind of embarrassing but whatever. took my mini 3 up into the mountains last weekend, first time flying somewhere that wasn't a flat open field basically. the altitude was around 2400m at the launch point and i honestly didn't think that would matter much but the thing was noticeably squirrelier than usual, kept getting these little attitude corrections that i dont normally see. wind was also way more unpredictable than at ground level, like it would just appear from nowhere. almost had a heart attack when a gust pushed it toward a ridgeline and i had to yank it back manually. got some decent footage but man it was stressful. anyone else find the transition from boring flat flying to mountain flying kind of a shock

yeah altitude does affect it, thinner air means the motors have to work harder to generate the same lift so you lose some of that snappy responsiveness. i noticed it first time i flew in colorado, felt like the drone was just a bit... floaty? not in a good way. honestly though the wind thing is the real killer at elevation, it behaves completely differently when youre up on exposed terrain. i usually keep it way closer to me than i normally would until i get a feel for what the air is doing that day

this is actually really good to know bc im planning a trip to the alps in the fall and was just gonna chuck it up like normal. never even thought about altitude being a factor, i just assumed if the gps is solid youre fine. how high is too high before it really starts being an issue do you think
