Looking at my first drone purchase and really torn between the DJI Mini 3 Pro and something cheaper like the Holy Stone HS720E. Everyone says GPS hold is essential for beginners, but is it worth the $400+ price difference?

I'm mainly interested in basic aerial photography and learning to fly. The budget drones seem to have decent cameras now, but lacking the GPS features. How much does GPS hold actually help during those first flights?

Would love to hear from people who started with budget drones vs those who went straight to DJI. Did the GPS features make learning significantly easier?

GPS Hold is arguably the most valuable function for a beginner. This allows the drone to lock its position using satellite data, enabling it to hover in place without your constant input. When a gust of wind hits, or you just need a second to think, the drone stays put.

I started with a budget drone and upgraded after 3 crashes. The GPS hold alone would have saved me hundreds in repairs.

Honestly? I learned fine on a cheaper drone without GPS. Most beginners feel comfortable with basic controls ? takeoff, hover, and landing ? within their first 2?3 sessions. Flying smoothly and confidently in different environments typically takes 5?10 hours of practice. The key is starting slow and in open areas.

GPS is nice but not absolutely essential if you're disciplined about practice locations. However, Return-to-Home (RTH) function is your safety net and that's where the real value is. Budget drones often have unreliable or no RTH, which can cost you the drone entirely if something goes wrong.
