Complete first flight checklist for absolute beginners

  • Members

Just got my first drone (DJI Mini 4K) and want to make sure I do everything right on day one. What's your step-by-step pre-flight routine?

I've read the manual but looking for real-world advice on what actually matters most. Also nervous about the first takeoff - any specific tips for that moment when you first push the throttle?

Planning to practice in a local park with plenty of open space. Weather looks calm this weekend.

Start in beginner mode. Every modern consumer drone has a beginner or cine mode that limits speed, reduces sensitivity, and keeps the drone closer to you. Always start here ? you can disable it once you're comfortable with the controls.

Wait for GPS lock ? most drones show this via LED or app indicator. Do not take off without it ? Check battery level ? fly only on a full charge for your first session ? Slowly push the left stick (throttle) upward ? the drone will lift off ? Climb to about 10 feet and stop. Let the drone hover. Do not touch the sticks ? Practice hovering at 10 feet for 60 seconds without touching the sticks

Good choice on location! My essentials: 1) Check propellers are tight 2) Confirm GPS satellites (usually needs 8+) 3) Set return-to-home height above any obstacles 4) Test controller connection 5) Start with gentle throttle - don't jerk it up fast

Develop a checklist covering battery status, propellers, firmware, and GPS lock and stick to it every single time.

That first takeoff feeling is amazing! For any beginner, the best practice sessions happen during the "golden hours"?that first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. Calmer winds and better light for seeing your drone. Take it super slow on that first flight - just up, hover, and back down. Don't try anything fancy!
