background: i've been shooting aerial footage for about two years, mostly real estate and some event work. currently running a Zenmuse X7 on my Inspire 2 and honestly the footage is great, clients are happy, no real complaints. but ive been looking at some setups people are rigging with full Micro Four Thirds cameras ? specifically the GH6 ? and the dynamic range difference in certain lighting conditions is pretty noticeable when you compare side by side.

the problem is going that route means building out a custom frame, sourcing a gimbal that can handle the weight properly, recalculating flight times because obviously payload goes up, and just generally a whole project. i keep going back and forth on whether the image quality difference actually justifies all of that for the work i'm doing. like is anyone actually running something in that weight class for commercial work and finding it worth the hassle vs just using an integrated system

honestly the X7 is already a really capable sensor for most commercial applications and i'd push back a little on the idea that you're leaving a ton on the table. the GH6 has great dynamic range but you're also adding complexity that can genuinely hurt you on a paid job ? more points of failure, more setup time, more things to go wrong in the field. i went through a phase of wanting to rig up custom payloads for everything and eventually came back to integrated systems for anything client-facing just because reliability matters more than marginal image quality improvements when someone's paying you.

im running a GH5S on a custom rig for some doc work and yeah its a whole thing to manage. flight time takes a hit, you really have to nail your gimbal balancing every single time, and if anything shifts mid-job you can end up with unusable footage. that said the low light performance is genuinely in a different league which for my specific use case matters a lot. if your real estate shoots are daytime with decent light i honestly dont think you'd notice enough difference to make it worth blowing up a workflow that already works
