so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about a year and a half now and wind is still the thing that messes with my head the most. like i know the specs say it can handle up to 38 or 43 kph or whatever but thats not really useful info in practice is it. the drone holds its position fine but my footage is garbage and the thing is working so hard you can hear it straining.

yesterday i was out at the coast and it was probably 25 kph sustained with gusts pushing higher and i kept second guessing myself the whole time. landed twice thinking id call it, then took off again. ended up with like 40 minutes of unusable clips because the horizon was just constantly correcting and the whole image had that jittery stabilized look.

curious how other people actually make the call on this. do you have a number in your head, do you watch the trees, what. because i feel like ive been winging it for a year and still dont have a system.

honestly for me its the Beaufort scale and i know that sounds like something a sailing dad would say but it actually works. once youre past force 4, so like leaves and small branches moving, small whitecaps on water, i start thinking hard about whether its worth it. force 5 and im usually done unless im just practicing windy flying on purpose with nothing to lose.

the number in the specs is survivability, not usability. my old air 2s could technically fly in conditions that would make every shot worthless. i think the more useful question is what do you need the footage for. if its just for yourself then sure push it and learn something. if theres any kind of deliverable involved just dont. wind will make you look like a beginner even when you know what youre doing and clients dont care about weather excuses.

also the jittery horizon thing you described is often the gimbal fighting wind buffeting and there isnt really a fix in post that looks good. had a whole shoot last spring that was just unusable for exactly that reason.

i just watch my battery drain rate tbh. if the drone is working hard against wind the battery drops way faster than normal and i can feel the session shrinking in real time. kind of a lazy metric but it also tells you how hard the motors are pushing.
