switching from manual scouting to drone mapping for my fields ? worth it?

so ive been running a mid-size corn and soy operation for about 12 years now and we still do most of our scouting on foot or with a UTV. buddy of mine just picked up a DJI Agras T40 for his place and keeps telling me its changed everything for him but honestly im not sure if im at the scale where it makes sense yet.

were talking roughly 800 acres split across 4 fields, not all contiguous. the main thing id want is NDVI mapping to catch stress early before it shows up visually and maybe identify drainage issues we keep having in the northwest corner of the big field. secondary interest is variable rate spraying but thats more of a future thing.

question is ? does anyone actually use this workflow day to day or is it more of a novelty that looks good on paper. also curious what the learning curve looks like if youre not already deep into the drone stuff, im not a complete beginner but im not flying regularly either

800 acres across 4 fields is actually a pretty solid use case, thats not too small at all. we run a similar setup and started with just a Mavic 3 Multispectral for the NDVI work before even thinking about the sprayer side of things. honestly the mapping alone paid for itself in the first season because we caught a fungal issue in one field almost 2 weeks before it would've been visible otherwise. gave us enough time to actually do something about it.

the T40 is a beast but if youre just starting out and primarily want monitoring, that might be overkill for now. the multispectral route is cheaper to get into and the data pipeline is pretty manageable with DJI Terra or even Pix4Dfields if you want more control. learning curve is real but if you can plan a basic grid mission youre like 80% of the way there. the data interpretation is honestly the harder part ? knowing what youre looking at in the NDVI output takes a season or two to really internalize.

the drainage thing is where i think youll get immediate value tbh. we flew ours after a heavy rain and the elevation data from a standard photogrammetry run showed us exactly where water was pooling in a way that years of walking that field never made obvious. its one of those things where you see it from above and youre like oh, obviously, that low spot has been killing yield for years.

cant speak to the T40 specifically but variable rate stuff does require a lot more setup on the agronomic side, you need prescription maps and someone to actually build them. the monitoring workflow is much simpler to get into and the ROI arguement is easier to make to yourself before you drop serious money
