FAA finally updated the remote ID rules or am I reading this wrong

  • Members

so i was going through the FAA site last night trying to figure out if my old Mavic Mini still needs remote ID compliance and i honestly got more confused the further i read. like they updated some stuff about the broadcast module requirements but i cant tell if that applies retroactively to drones under 250g or if its just for anything registered. ive been flying recreationally for like 3 years and never had to deal with any of this stuff until recently and now my local flying spot has signs up about it.

did anyone else see the notice they posted in like late march? or maybe i imagined it. i just dont want to get hit with a fine for something i didnt even know changed

yeah the rules around sub-250g drones are still kind of a gray area in terms of enforcement but technically if you're flying recreationally and not in controlled airspace you've been mostly fine. the remote ID broadcast requirement was phased in but the FAA has been pretty lenient about it especially for smaller craft. that said i'd double check the FRIA list for your local spot because if theres a designated area near you that might be your easiest out without needing to modify anything on the mini.

i went through the same rabbit hole last fall and it took me forever to find the actual updated compliance dates buried in the federal register. not exactly user friendly lol
