so ive been flying my mini 3 for like 8 months now and yesterday was honestly the first time i felt like i actually got something worth keeping. flew out to the reservoir near my house around 6:30 and the light was just doing its thing, that golden hour stuff people always talk about. i had the ND64 on and kept the shutter at double my frame rate like you're supposed to but the highlights on the water were still getting blown out a little. shot in d-log and brought it into resolve and it came out decent but not amazing.

anyone else find sunset over water way harder to expose for than it looks? i feel like i nail it on land shots but something about the reflection just throws me off every time. happy to share the clip if anyone wants to look at it and tell me what i screwed up lol

yeah post it, always happy to look at someone elses footage. sunset over water is genuinely tricky, the dynamic range is just massive. i usually drop down to ND256 even when it feels like overkill and then just recover shadows in post. also are you using auto white balance? cause that'll shift on you mid clip sometimes and it looks awful when you're color grading later. lock it manually before you take off.

oh man i had the exact same problem last summer, kept clipping the water highlights no matter what i did. eventually someone told me to just expose for the sky and let the water be a stop underexposed, then lift it in post. looked way more natural than trying to nail both at once. your mini 3 doing 4k or 2.7k? makes a difference in how much room you have to grade.
