so ive been doing some contract work for a few small farms nearby and they want proper orthomosaics and elevation models, nothing crazy, just like 50-200 acre fields mostly. been using a trial of DroneDeploy and honestly its pretty smooth for getting stuff out fast but the price is kind of absurd when you scale up missions. a buddy told me pix4d is more accurate especially for the point clouds but i havent actually sat down with it long enough to form a real opinion.

my current setup is a mavic 3 enterprise so gsd is fine for what they need, and im doing the flights with double grid patterns at around 75% front and 80% side overlap. the processed orthomosaics look decent in DD but im not sure if im leaving accuracy on the table vs what pix4d could do with the same data. anyone actually run both on the same dataset and compared? or even just have a strong preference after using both for a while

ran both on the same corn field last fall just to see. pix4d point cloud was noticeably denser and the DSM had better edge definition around the tree lines, but for flat open fields honestly DD gets you like 95% of the way there and the workflow is just faster. if youre delivering to farmers who need NDVI maps and basic elevation stuff DD is probably fine. if someone wants actual survey-grade outputs or youre feeding the data into something like Trimble or AgTech platforms then yeah pix4d pulls ahead. the calibration options alone are worth it for serious work.

also pix4d desktop vs cloud matters a lot here. the desktop version chews through processing locally and you get way more control over tie point filtering and the rayCloud editor which is genuinely useful when you have weird artifacts. DD is basically a black box, you send up the images and get back what it gives you.

i switched to ODM (OpenDroneMap) for most of my ag stuff because i got tired of subscription costs honestly. not as polished but the outputs are solid and its free. just takes more setup time and your machine needs to be decent to run it locally. might not be practical if youre trying to turn things around quickly for clients but worth looking into if cost is a factor
