so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about a year and a half now and wind is still the thing that gets me every time. not crashes, not battery issues, just... wind. i always second guess myself on whether to go up or not.

like today there was a steady 18mph with gusts pushing maybe 25-28 and i had a shoot to do. ended up going up anyway and the footage was mostly fine but the drone was working hard the whole time, return to home was sketchy, and i burned through battery way faster than normal. got maybe 14 minutes of usable flight instead of the usual 20+.

i know the spec sheet says it can handle up to 27mph or whatever but that feels very optimistic to me. anyone have a rule of thumb they actually use in the field? like do you go by the steady wind or the gusts? im not talking about fixed wing stuff, just regular quads for video work.

gusts are what kill you, not the steady wind. steady wind your aircraft just compensates and sits there, gusts are what cause those sudden lurches and freak out the stabilization. my general rule for anything where i care about the footage is if gusts are hitting over 20 i start getting real selective about whether the shot is worth it. over 25 i usually scrub unless its something i absolutely cannot reschedule.

also flying into the wind on takeoff and landing makes a huge difference. gives you more control authority when you need it most. and yeah the manufacturer wind ratings are basically best case scenario flat field no turbulence numbers. near trees, buildings, anything that breaks up the airflow and you can have real nasty mechanical turbulence even when the reported wind speed seems manageable. been flying for about 6 years and i still get surprised by it near structures.

this is something i think about constantly too. what app are you using for weather? i switched to UAV Forecast a while back and it actually accounts for gusts separately which helps a lot for planning. windy.com is good too for seeing how wind behaves at different altitudes which is kind of wild sometimes, totally different up at 200ft than at ground level
