okay so ive been going back and forth on this for honestly like three months and i need to just make a decision. the X7 on the Inspire 2 is obviously a really clean integrated setup and the DL mount lenses are sharp as hell, ive seen the footage and it holds up even when you start pushing it in post. but the whole ecosystem lock-in thing bothers me and the cost of the DL lenses is just brutal if you want more than one or two options.

the alternative ive been looking at is a Sony A7C II or even the FX3 on a Gremsy or maybe a Freefly gimbal on a larger platform. the FX3 in particular is tempting because of the active cooling and the fact that i already own a bunch of Sony glass. payload would be on the heavier side obviously but im building out a heavy lift hex anyway so weight isnt really the limiting factor here.

the thing i keep coming back to is stabilization quality. like the X7 integration with the Inspire's flight controller for horizon leveling and all that ? does a third party gimbal actually get close to that when you factor in signal lag and how the two systems talk to each other? or is that mostly marketing and in practice the difference is pretty minimal on a well tuned rig?

ran an X7 for about 18 months on commercial jobs and then switched to an FX3 on a Freefly MoVI carbon when i moved to a different platform and honestly the stabilization difference is less dramatic than i expected. the X7 integration is cleaner for sure, like you get proper horizon lock tied into the flight controller and the latency on control inputs is lower, but on a well tuned third party setup with a good IMU the actual footage quality is really comparable in normal shooting conditions. where the X7 setup genuinely wins is in turbulent conditions or when you're doing aggressive movements ? the tighter integration just keeps up better. if youre doing slow cinematic stuff the FX3 route is probably fine and the flexibility is worth it.

i'd just go X7 if the Inspire 2 is already part of your workflow. i know the lens cost is painful but the DL 35mm f2.8 alone is worth it imo, that lens is genuinely excellent and the compact form factor means your aero balance is way easier to deal with. putting a full mirrorless body up there adds so many variables ? heat management, cable routing, making sure your CG is right, different behavior in wind ? its doable obviously but it's more stuff to troubleshoot on a job when something goes weird. and something always goes weird.
