so this might sound like a weird question because the usual answer is obviously build your own if you know how but hear me out. ive been building quads for about four years, got maybe a dozen builds under my belt ranging from 3inch toothpicks up to 7inch long range stuff. i know how to solder, i understand the stack configurations, ive done my share of fighting with Betaflight PID tuning at 2am.

lately ive been wondering if the prebuilt market has just gotten good enough that its not worth my time anymore. like the time i spend sourcing parts, waiting on shipping from multiple vendors, assembling, debugging ? if an iFlight or even a Flywoo comes pretuned and ready to rip, is the custom build still meaningfully better or am i just doing it for the hobby aspect of the hobby at this point.

not complaining about the process, i actually like it. just curious if anyone else has thought about this and whether theres a real performance argument left for custom over prebuilt at the intermediate to advanced level. or is it all just component selection at that point, like the frame choice and motor combo being the only thing that really matters.

yeah ive gone back and forth on this. i think the honest answer is for most flying the prebuilts are fine now, like genuinely fine. Flywoo Explorer LR stuff is solid, the Nazgul series flys well out of the box. but ive always ended up finding something i wanted to change after a week anyway, different capacitors, swapping the vtx, reflashing with my own Betaflight preset. so it kind of becomes a partial custom regardless.

the real argument for building yourself is still frame and motor pairing in my opinion. prebuilts tend to play it safe with motor choices that work for the widest range of pilots, which means they're not necessarily optimized for how you specifically fly. if you're a heavy freestyle guy who likes to over-prop and push efficiency out the window youre probably going to retune and swap stuff anyway. if youre doing more cinematic or long range where efficiency matters a lot, again the stock tune probably isnt dialed for your specific battery setup and flying style.

so i guess my take is: prebuilt has gotten genuinely good but the customization ceiling is still why you build. if youre honest with yourself and you just want to fly and not fiddle, grab a prebuilt and dont feel bad about it.

the time cost argument is real and i think people in this hobby undervalue their own time a lot. spent three weekends debugging an ESC issue on my last build that wouldve been a non-issue on a prebuilt. still dont fully regret it but i did think about that at like 11pm on a Sunday with a multimeter in my hand
