my PIDs feel totally wrong after reflashing ? can't figure out what changed

  • Members

this has been bugging me for like two weeks. reflashed betaflight to 4.4.3 from 4.3 something and my quad just does not feel right anymore. its like the whole character changed. its a 5inch with F405 and 2207 motors, been flying it for about eight months and had it dialed in pretty well before the update.

the main thing i notice is it feels kinda mushy in fast rolls, like theres a slight delay that wasnt there before. and on quick direction changes it feels a bit wobbly, not like full on oscillations just... imprecise? hard to describe. i did load the stock pids that betaflight suggested for my weight class but maybe thats the issue, my tune before was pretty customized.

also switched to RPM filtering at the same time because i heard 4.4 handles it better but now i cant tell if the issue is the pid change or the RPM filter setup or just something else with the firmware. probably shouldve changed one thing at a time but here we are

classic mistake changing multiple things at once, been there. the RPM filter in 4.4 does behave a bit differently and if your motor poles arent configured correctly in betaflight it'll throw the whole thing off. double check that first, its a dumb easy thing to miss after a reflash.

also the default PIDs in 4.4 are tuned more conservatively than 4.3 defaults, they changed the master multiplier defaults i believe. if your old tune was aggressive youre going to feel that mushiness because D is probably lower than what you had. id try bumping D term up a bit and see if the precision comes back before you go down a rabbit hole of anything else.

the 4.3 to 4.4 jump is actually bigger than people think in terms of how the filtering stack works. i had a similar thing where my quad felt like a totally diffrent machine and it took me probably three or four pack sessions to get it back to where i liked it. one thing that helped me was pulling my blackbox logs and actually looking at what the gyro trace looked like compared to the setpoint, you can see pretty clearly if its a filtering issue or a pid issue from that.

also i know its annoying to hear but Joshua Bardwell did a whole video specifically on migrating tunes from 4.3 to 4.4, i think he covers most of the gotchas. saved me a lot of headscratching
