Motor and ESC matching for 2207 motors - Current ratings confusion

Building my first 5" freestyle quad and getting conflicting advice on ESC current ratings. The ESC's rated current must exceed the motor's maximum continuous current by 20?30% to handle instantaneous current spikes. For example, the MEPS SZ2207 V2 motor 1750KV paired with 4942 propellers has a maximum peak current of 33.3A at 100% throttle, so the ESC should be rated above 45A. However, I've seen people running 2207 motors on 35A ESCs without issues. 20x20mm ESCs are smaller and lighter but not as reliable as 30x30mm ESCs due to the larger MOSFETs on the latter. Additionally, soldering is easier on 30x30mm ESCs thanks to larger solder pads. Is the 20-30% overhead really necessary, or is this just theoretical worst-case calculations?

When TBS says the ESC is rated for 70 amps, I believe they actually tested it at 70 amps instead of just pulling that number out of their butt like most manufacturers would. The problem is most cheap

When TBS says the ESC is rated for 70 amps, I believe they actually tested it at 70 amps instead of just pulling that number out of their butt like most manufacturers would. The problem is most cheap ESC manufacturers inflate their ratings. A "50A" ESC might only handle 35A continuously in real conditions.
