something weird happening with my Air 3 RC2 controller in cold weather

  • Members

not sure if this is a known thing or just my unit but the last few times ive been out flying when its been cold ? like 4 or 5 degrees celsius ? the RC2 screen gets really sluggish and sometimes the touch input just stops responding properly. the drone itself seems fine, its flying okay, but the controller feels like its lagging badly. had one moment where i tapped RTH and it took maybe 3-4 seconds to register which was a bit alarming

i keep it in my jacket pocket between flights to try and keep it warm but it doesnt seem to help much. anyone dealt with this or is there a setting im missing or something. googled it a bit but didnt find much specific to the RC2

yeah this is a pretty common issue with LCD and touchscreen controllers in the cold, its not really a DJI specific problem. the screen refresh rate drops and the touch layer gets less responsive when the temps go down. what helped me was getting one of those hand warmer pocket things and keeping the controller in a small insulated pouch between flights rather than just a jacket pocket, the jacket doesnt retain heat as well as youd think

also worth checking if theres a firmware update pending, i feel like there was something a while back that supposedly helped with cold weather performance but im not 100% on that for the RC2 specifically

The 3-4 second RTH delay in cold would have stressed me out too. I don't have the RC2 (still on my phone mount setup) but I've read on here before that DJI's operating temp specs for the controller are a bit optimistic. Some people use thin touchscreen-compatible gloves which obviously doesn't fix the screen lag but at least you're not making it worse by having cold fingers on it. Might be worth posting in the DJI subreddit too, bigger sample size over there
