so ive been flying whoops for about a year and finally decided to do a proper 5inch freestyle build. picked up a ImpulseRC Apex frame because everyone seems to love it and i got a decent deal on one. the problem is im now second guessing my stack choice before i even start soldering anything.

i was going to go with a SpeedyBee F405 V3 stack because its cheap and has the built in bluetooth for configurating without a computer which honestly sounds amazing when im out at the field. but then someone in my local group said i should just get a proper separate FC and ESC, like a Mamba or something. is the integrated stack really that much of a compromise or is that old thinking at this point. also running Xing2 2207 motors which i think should be fine for freestyle.

also slightly nervous about the soldering since ive only ever done light stuff on whoop boards. any tips for not destroying a $60 ESC on my first attempt would be great

speedybee stacks are honestly way better than people give them credit for, the bluetooth config thing is genuinely useful not just a gimmick. ive used the F405 V3 on two builds now and had zero issues. the ESC handles 6S fine and thermal performance is decent as long as you're not doing 10 minute race runs back to back.

for soldering ? tin your pads first, let the iron get fully up to temp before you touch anything (i use 380c for motor wires on a bigger ESC), and dont hold the iron on the pad for more than like 2-3 seconds at a time. give it a second to cool between attempts. biggest mistake i see beginners make is using too little solder and getting cold joints that look fine but fail under vibration. also get some flux, makes everything so much cleaner.

the apex is a great frame choice tbh, arms on that thing are pretty beefy. i had one for a while before i switched to a different geometry just personal preference.

cant really comment on that specific stack but i will say dont stress the separate FC vs AIO stack debate too much, that argument has been going on forever and honestly at the hobbyist level its not gonna matter. just build the thing and fly it, you learn way more from actually crashing a build than from reading about stacks for another month
