so ive been running an Inspire 2 with the X7 for a few years now doing mostly commercial real estate and some short doc work and im starting to wonder if its still the right tool or if im just used to it at this point. the thing is it still produces incredible footage when everything is working, the X7 with the 16mm gets this look that i genuinely havent been able to replicate on anything smaller. but the hassle factor has been creeping up on me lately.

the dual battery setup is annoying on location especially when clients are watching, the TB50s are getting old and i need to replace them which is another chunk of money, and DJI basically treats the Inspire line like an afterthought now. no real firmware updates in ages, the app situation is still kind of a mess if you want to do anything beyond basic operation.

im not really asking if the footage quality is there because it obviously is, more like is anyone else reconsidering whether the operational overhead is worth it compared to something like going full cinema with a dedicated payload drone or even just shooting on a Mavic 3 Cine and color grading harder. feel like i know what the answer is but wanted to see if anyone else is at that crossroads

honestly been feeling the same way for about a year. the X7 is genuinely one of the best cinema sensors ever put in a drone, i dont think thats even debatable, but youre right that the operational side just wears you down over time. i had a TB50 die mid-job last spring and the backup took forever to warm up properly because it was cold and the client was standing right there looking at me. not a great moment.

that said i tried a shoot on a Mavic 3 Cine as a backup once and while the footage was fine it just wasnt the same in post. the dynamic range difference is real and if youre doing anything with heavy grading or delivering for broadcast the X7 still has a noticeable edge. so i keep coming back to the Inspire just grudgingly. i think if DJI ever actually released an Inspire 3 with modernized ops it would be a no brainer but at this point who knows if thats even coming

the TB50 thing is such a pain, i just replaced four of them and its not cheap. but for what i do (mostly episodic TV b-roll and some commercial) there really isnt another option in that price bracket that gives me interchangeable lenses and that sensor. the Zenmuse X7 shooting CinemaDNG is still something i can hand off to a colorist and they get excited, that doesnt happen with other platforms at this price point.

if budget wasnt a thing id probably look at something like a Freefly with a proper cinema cam but thats a whole different category of cost and complexity. for now the Inspire 2 is still my answer even if its getting long in the tooth
