RunCam vs DJI O3 on a custom 5" build ? worth the price difference?

  • Members

so ive been running a RunCam Phoenix 2 on my 5inch freestyle build for like a year and a half now and honestly it's been fine, no complaints really, but lately ive been seeing a lot of people swap over to the DJI O3 Air Unit and the footage looks insane compared to what im getting. problem is thats a pretty significant jump in cost and i'd basically need to rebuild parts of my stack to accommodate it.

my current setup is nothing fancy ? betaflight on an F7, emax motors, the usual stuff. gimbal is out of the question on a freestyle rig obviously but im just talking pure image quality here. the rolling shutter on the Phoenix 2 is noticeable in fast rolls and i've kind of accepted it but watching some O3 footage last night made me wonder if i've just been tolerating something i dont have to.

anyone made this switch? was it actually worth it or is it one of those things where you spend the money and then realize the footage difference only matters if you're doing cinematic stuff not just bashing around

made the switch about 8 months ago and honestly the rolling shutter alone was worth it for me. the O3 handles fast direction changes way better and the low light performance isnt even close. that said if youre just doing park bashing and uploading 720p clips to your instagram story nobody is gonna notice lol. where it matters is if you actually care about the final product. the latency on the goggles also dropped noticeably which was a bonus i wasnt expecting.

the stack rebuild isnt that bad either, i was dreading it but it took maybe an afternoon. just make sure your frame has room for the air unit because some tighter 5inch frames are a pain about it.

i mean the O3 is good but people way overstate how bad the Phoenix 2 rolling shutter is imo. ive seen plenty of great freestyle footage shot on worse cameras. if your flying is the weak point upgrading the camera isnt gonna fix that. not saying yours is, just a general thing i see a lot where people blame gear for stuff thats actually technique
