so ive been going back and forth on this for about two seasons now. we run a mix of corn and soybeans, roughly 400 acres split across three fields, and right now scouting is just me and one part-time guy walking rows which honestly isnt cutting it anymore. missing pest pressure until its too late, variable emergence we dont catch until ground truthing weeks after the fact.

been looking seriously at a Mavic 3 Multispectral for the NDVI work and maybe a DJI Agras T40 or T25 for spraying down the road, but im not sure if the multispectral data is actually actionable without a bunch of GIS background i dont have. like do you actually need to be running Pix4Dfields or something similar to make sense of the outputs or is there a more approachable workflow for someone whos not a data scientist

also curious if anyone has actually seen ROI on the monitoring side specifically, not just the spraying. the spraying ROI case seems pretty obvious but justified the monitoring investment is harder for me to quantify

the multispectral ROI question is real and i dont think anyone gives you a straight answer because it genuinely depends on your operation. for us it clicked around year two when we started overlaying the NDVI maps with our yield data from the combine and started seeing the spatial patterns repeat. like there were zones we were treating uniformly that just didnt need it, and zones that needed earlier intervention that we were always late on.

on the software side ? Pix4Dfields is decent but its not free and the learning curve is real. DJI Terra does an okay job for basic index maps if you're already in the DJI ecosystem which it sounds like you would be. honestly for a 400 acre operation you might be surprised how readable the raw index maps are once you get a few flights under your belt, you dont need to be a GIS person to see that one corner of your field is always showing stress two weeks before the rest. thats the point where you walk that corner and figure out why.

the T40 is a beast but probably overkill if youre not doing a ton of spray volume. T25 makes more sense for your acreage unless you're planning to take on custom application work.

cant speak to the spraying side but i picked up an M3M last spring and have been running it on about 250 acres of wheat and its been pretty eye opening tbh. the workflow i settled on is just DJI Terra for the processing, export the NDVI tiff, drop it into QGIS which is free, and just use a simple classification. took me maybe a weekend to get comfortable with it and im not a tech person at all really.

the thing nobody tells you is ground truthing still matters a lot. the map shows you where to look, not what the problem is. so you still walk, just way less of it and way more targeted. for me thats been the actual value.
