alright so ive been shooting with the stock setup on my M300 for about a year now and the image quality is honestly fine for most of what i do, but ive been getting more inspection and mapping contracts and clients are starting to ask for stuff the built-in sensor just cant really deliver. thinking about going to a Sony A7R body with a dedicated mapping lens on a third party gimbal, probably the Gremsy T3V3 or something in that class.

the weight jump is pretty significant and i know it's gonna hurt my flight time noticeably. currently getting around 40 minutes in calm conditions and i'm expecting to drop to maybe 25-28 with the heavier rig. that's manageable with battery swaps but im more worried about the gimbal handling the extra mass during acceleration changes and whether stabilization is going to be comparable to what im used to with an integrated system. integrated systems always feel like they have an edge because everything is tuned together from the factory.

anyone actually running a mirrorless body on a hex or octo class machine for professional work? curious if the image quality jump actually justifies the operational headache or if im just chasing specs

ran a GH5 on a Gremsy H16 for about 8 months doing construction progress stuff and honestly the stabilization was solid once i got the balance dialed. key thing people underestimate is how long proper balancing takes ? not just static balance but accounting for the lens length and making sure the CG is actually where the gimbal expects it. i spent like two hours on it the first time. after that though the footage was noticeably sharper than anything the integrated cameras were giving me, especially in low light. flight time hit was real though, cant pretend otherwise

the integrated vs third party gimbal thing is a real consideration and i dont think people talk about it enough. when DJI tunes the Zenmuse for their own aircraft theres just this tightness to the stabilization that third party setups struggle to match, especially during yaw movements or quick direction changes. the gremsy stuff is genuinely good but there's always this slight softness in the stabilization response compared to native. for mapping with a fixed lens doing slow methodical passes it probably doesnt matter much. for video work where you're doing anything dynamic it might bother you. depends on your use case i guess
