switching from manual scouting to drone monitoring ? worth it for small operation?

so ive been running about 340 acres of corn and soybeans for the past few years and we do all our scouting on foot or ATV which honestly takes forever especially mid season when things are moving fast. been looking at getting into drone monitoring but im not sure if the ROI actually works out for someone my size, most of the case studies i see are for these massive operations in the midwest running thousands of acres.

currently eyeing the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral just because its relatively plug and play compared to setting up a full Matrice situation, and the NDVI output from what ive seen looks decent enough for catching stress early. my main use case would be identifying problem areas before they spread, we had a gray leaf spot issue last year that cost us probably 15% yield in one field because we just didnt catch it until it was way too late.

anyone running a setup like this on a smaller acreage? is the multispectral actually usable for disease detection or is it more of a soil moisture / stress indicator type thing? and do you need to be doing this every week to get real value or is like twice a season enough to justify it

340 acres is actually a pretty solid size to justify it imo, the break even point people throw around is usually somewhere around 200-250 acres depending on what crops you're running and your labor costs. the M3M is a good call for your situation honestly, the micasense alternatives are more powerful but the workflow is a lot heavier and you'd need more software overhead to process everything.

on the disease detection question ? its complicated. multispectral is good at detecting stress signatures but it doesnt tell you *what* the stress is, so gray leaf spot and drought stress can look pretty similar in NDVI. the real value is it narrows down where to go look rather than replacing boots on the ground entirely. for your corn situation i'd probably be flying every 10-14 days during that critical window between V6 and tassel, thats when fungal stuff tends to show up and spread fast. twice a season would probably miss too much.

yeah i cant speak to the agronomic side as much but workflow wise the M3M is genuinely pretty smooth if you're already comfortable with DJI stuff. the DJI Terra integration for generating NDVI maps is usable, not the best processing software out there but for scouting purposes its fine. just make sure you're flying around solar noon or close to it, the reflectance panel calibration matters a lot more than people think and i screwed up my first few flights by not accounting for it properly.
