so ive been flying my avata 2 for about 8 months now and wind is still the thing that gets me every time. like i know the specs say it can handle whatever, class 5 or 6 wind resistance, but that doesnt really tell you anything useful when youre standing in a field trying to decide if its too sketchy to fly or not.

had a situation last weekend where gusts were coming through maybe 20-25mph but it wasnt constant, just random bursts every minute or two. flew anyway and honestly the footage was unusable, the craft was fighting so hard to hold position that even in sport mode with manual corrections it looked like i was flying drunk. no damage or anything but it got me thinking i have no real framework for when to say no.

curious how experienced guys handle this ? do you have like a personal cutoff in mph, or is it more about the type of wind (gusts vs steady) and what youre trying to shoot or fly? because steady 20mph feels totally different than random 25mph gusts even though the numbers are closer than youd think

gusts are always worse than steady wind, full stop. a steady headwind your craft just leans into and stabilizes, gusts are basically random force inputs that the IMU and barometer have to react to after the fact so theres always that lag where the thing is getting pushed before it starts correcting. for cinematic stuff i personally wont fly anything above maybe 15mph gusting, just not worth the grade in post. for just ripping around in sport or acro mode i'll push it further because at that point smooth footage isnt the goal anyway and the manual inputs kind of mask the wind correction.

the other thing nobody talks about is direction relative to your flight path. flying directly into a steady 20mph headwind is annoying but manageable. flying perpendicular to a 20mph wind with gusts while trying to do a tracking shot is where things get hairy fast because the craft is constantly crabbing and you get that weird yaw jitter in the footage.

honestly i just check windy.com before i go out now, way more granular than weather apps. but yeah my rough rule is anything gusting over 20 and im probably not pulling the quad out unless im just doing something for fun with no stakes. lost a mini 3 to wind not because it crashed but because it was fighting so hard coming back that it burned the battery trying to RTH and then just started descending. landed safe but it was close and completely my fault for pushing it.
