ok so i picked up a DJI Mini 2 SE last week because i kept seeing cool aerial shots on instagram and figured why not. ive never flown anything like this before, not even RC cars really. i did the tutorial in the app and flew around my backyard a few times but honestly i feel like im going to crash it every single time i lift off.

my main question is like... is there a specific order i should be learning things? i dont know if i should just keep flying in my yard or go somewhere more open. also the return to home thing, does that actually work reliably or is it one of those features that sounds better than it is. i turned it on once and it came back and landed about 3 feet from where it took off which seemed fine but idk if thats normal

also how long did it take people here to feel comfortable. im hovering ok but the moment i try to do anything more than go straight i get nervous

3 feet off on RTH is actually pretty normal, especially if you didnt let it get a good home point lock before takeoff. always wait for that GPS accuracy to settle before you go up, the app will show you how many satellites its connected to. more is better, i usually wait til its at least 14-15 before i lift off for anything serious.

as for learning order, honestly just spend a ton of time hovering and getting used to orientation. the hardest thing for most beginners is when the drone is flying toward you and left/right get flipped in your head. go to an empty field or a park when its not busy and just practice flying slow figure eights, sounds boring but it builds muscle memory faster than anything else. i flew a phantom 3 for like two months before i felt truly comfortable and even then i had a few close calls. just take it slow and dont trust sport mode until you really know what youre doing

im kind of in the same boat lol got mine like a month ago. the thing that helped me most was just accepting id probably ding it eventually and stressing less. i also found some youtube channels that do beginner tutorials specifically for the mini 2 and going through those helped me understand what all the settings actually do instead of just guessing
