do i really need to register before flying or can i just go out and practice

so i bought a small drone, its under 250g, and someone told me i dont have to register it but then i read something online that said i still need to pass a test or something. genuinely confused about what the actual rules are. im in the US if that matters.

i just want to fly in my neighborhood or maybe a local park, nothing crazy, no commercial stuff. feels like theres a lot of conflicting info out there and i cant tell whats current vs outdated. do people actually get stopped by anyone for this kind of thing or is it mostly just theoretical rules that nobody enforces

yeah the rules changed a while back and its honestly kind of a mess to understand at first. if your drone is under 250g you dont have to register the aircraft itself but if youre flying recreationally you still technically need to pass the TRUST test which is free and takes like 20 minutes. its not hard, mostly just common sense stuff about airspace and safety. you can find it through the FAA website. its one of those things most casual flyers skip but if you ever got into a situation where someone called the cops on you at a park, having that cert on your phone is way better than not having it

also check B4UFLY or AirMap before you go anywhere, some parks are in controlled airspace and youll need an authorization even for a tiny drone. found that out the hard way when i drove 45 minutes to a spot and couldnt legally fly there

honestly the enforcement thing varies a lot by where you are. ive been flying for two years and never been stopped once but i know people who got hassled by park rangers over nothing. the TRUST test thing the other guy mentioned is real and worth doing just so you have something to show if anyone gives you grief. takes no time at all
