What's the best first drone under $300 for someone who's never flown before?

I've been wanting to get into drones but I'm completely new to this. My budget is around $300 and I want something that won't crash immediately when I try to fly it. What features should I absolutely look for as a beginner? I've heard about GPS and obstacle sensors but not sure if those are must-haves or nice-to-haves for learning.

For your first drone, focus on GPS stabilization and Return-to-Home (RTH) function - these are game changers for beginners. The DJI Mini 4K or Holy Stone HS720 are solid choices in your budget. Skip the obstacle sensors for now and prioritize flight time and stability.

I started with a $50 toy drone from Amazon to learn the controls before getting my "real" drone. Best decision ever - crashed it probably 20 times learning basic hovering. Would definitely recommend starting cheap for practice then upgrading once you get the hang of it.

Don't forget about beginner flight modes that limit speed and distance! Also get extra batteries - most drones only fly 15-20 minutes per charge. Pro tip: practice in a large open area first, not your backyard.
