ok so ive been flying dji for about two years and honestly the video quality is great but i keep seeing guys at the field ripping around on analog setups and having a blast and the latency on their stuff seems totally fine to them. my buddy keeps telling me analog is actually better for racing because of the latency but i dont fully get why the digital latency would matter that much when its like 30ms or whatever.

anyway ive been looking at the fat shark dominator hd3 vs just grabbing a pair of skyzone 04x goggles and i genuinely cant decide. the skyzone ones seem to have better reception with the diversity receivers built in but the fat sharks have that modular bay thing which i kind of like the idea of. mostly flying 5 inch freestyle and some light racing, not doing cinematic stuff at all so resolution isnt the biggest deal to me i think.

also what vtx should i pair with whichever goggles i go with ? running a 200mw vtx right now on my quad and wondering if thats enough or if i should bump to 400 or 600mw for the field we fly at which is pretty open with some tree lines around the edges.

the latency thing is real, 30ms doesnt sound like much but when youre reacting to gates and obstacles it adds up in a way your brain does notice even if you dont consciously register it. analog is typically sub 2ms end to end which is why racers still swear by it even in.

on the goggle question i'd honestly skip the hd3 at this point, its getting long in the tooth and the module bay is nice but the base display isnt great compared to newer stuff. the skyzone 04x is genuinely a good pair and the built in diversity with two receivers on different antennas makes a real difference if you're flying at range. for your setup id probably run a pagoda or lhcp stubby on the goggle and a cloverleaf on the quad, you dont need crazy antennas for freestyle distances but having circular polarized on both ends cuts multipath interference a lot.

200mw is usually fine for what youre describing but if you have tree lines around the edges i'd bump to 400mw just for peace of mind, the difference in range is noticeable and heat isnt a huge issue on most modern vtx at that power level.

i made this exact switch like six months ago and honestly i dont miss dji at all for freestyle. the analog picture looks worse on paper but when youre actually flying you just stop caring after like 10 minutes. the fat shark vs skyzone debate is kind of religious at this point but i went skyzone and no regrets, the foam faceplate is way more comfortable for long sessions imo.

one thing nobody told me when i switched was to actually check what frequency your vtx is set to before going out because i showed up to a race night and had it on the same channel as another guy and we were just destroying each others feed, took me forever to figure out what was happening lol
