so ive been running an Agras T40 for about a year now doing contract work for a couple of farms in my area and honestly the results are fine but the cost of everything associated with that platform is just brutal. replacement nozzles, the batteries, getting anything serviced ? its all locked into their ecosystem and my margins are getting squeezed pretty hard.

been looking at some of the XAG stuff and also some of the lesser known Chinese platforms that are showing up on alibaba. curious if anyone has actually made that jump and what the real world experience is like. not talking about specs on paper, i mean like, does the spray pattern hold up over a full season, how is the pump actually reliability, that kind of thing. the T40 pump has been rock solid for me so thats my benchmark basically.

also not sure how the regulatory side works if im switching platforms mid-season for commercial work, assuming my existing waivers would still cover it as long as the MTOW stays within limits but havent confirmed that yet

ran an XAG P100 for about 8 months alongside a buddys Agras setup and honestly the XAG holds up better than i expected. the breakaway arm system saved me twice when i clipped equipment and the pump hasnt given me any issues. what DID drive me crazy was the mission planning software ? its functional but its nowhere near as polished as DJI Terra for ag use. if your farms have complicated field boundaries or lots of obstacles you'll spend a lot more time pre-planning each job.

on the regulatory question ? yeah your existing COA or waiver should transfer as long as the aircraft stays in the same weight class and operation type but i'd call your FSDO and just get verbal confirmation, takes like 10 minutes and saves potential headaches. dont assume.

i looked into some of the alibaba stuff pretty hard last spring and ended up not pulling the trigger. the platforms that are cheap enough to actually move the needle on cost are also the ones where you basically can't get any support if something goes sideways. one of the guys in my local ag drone group bought some off-brand rig and spent three months going back and forth with the manufacturer about a firmware bug that was causing inconsistent flow rates. thats three months of potential revenue. might be worth it if you're handy and patient but for contract work i personally cant afford that kind of downtime risk
