been doing aerial scouting work for about two seasons now mostly with a Mavic 3 Multispectral and processing through Pix4Dfields. the NDVI maps look great, clients love seeing the pretty colored maps, but im starting to wonder how many of them are actually doing anything meaningfully different with the data vs just kind of... looking at it and then doing what they were gonna do anyway.

had one grower last fall who had a pretty obvious stressed zone show up in the northwest corner of his field three weeks before harvest. we flagged it, talked through possible causes ? could've been compaction, could've been drainage, whatever ? and then he just harvested it the same way as everything else. like okay. so what are we actually doing here

curious if others doing this kind of work have found ways to make the data actually actionable or if precision ag is still kind of ahead of where most farmers realistically are in terms of being able to respond to variable rate recommendations and stuff like that. genuinely not sure if this is a tech problem or an adoption problem or both

this is honestly the central tension in ag drone work right now and i dont think theres a clean answer. the tech has outpaced the infrastructure on the farm side ? variable rate application requires VRA-capable equipment which most mid-size operations just dont have, and even when they do there's a knowledge gap around interpreting the prescription maps and trusting them over gut instinct which is often 30+ years of experience. hard to compete with that emotionally even when the data is solid.

what i've found actually moves the needle is when you can connect the NDVI anomaly to a dolalr figure. like dont just show them the stressed zone, show them the yield drag estimate and what a targeted input response could've saved. farmers respond to economics way more than maps. takes more work on your end but changes the conversation completely.

yeah i get the frustration. i think part of it is also that a lot of the scouting products being sold to farmers position it as kind of a magic box where you fly and the drone tells you what to do, and when reality is more like 'here is a data layer that requires agronomic interpretation and follow-up ground truthing' people feel like they got oversold. setting expectations upfront about what the workflow actually looks like probably helps with the adoption piece. at least thats my working theory, still figuring it out honestly
