so ive been running an Inspire 1 with the X5S for a few years now and honestly it still gets the job done for most stuff but im starting to lose clients to guys with newer setups and i think a lot of it comes down to the image quality gap at this point. the X5S footage is good but when youre delivering to clients who are comparing it to ARRI or RED stuff even in the compressed delivery formats it starts to show.

been looking seriously at the Inspire 3 with the full frame sensor situation and the Zenmuse X9-8K and i mean the specs on paper are insane but im trying to figure out if anyone is actually using this for real narrative or commercial work and not just demo reels. like does the 8K RAW actually hold up in post, how are the colorists responding to the files, does it integrate with a real camera workflow without being a pain.

also the dual operator thing ? i know the Inspire line has always been built for that but i mostly fly solo these days unless its a big job. curious if anyone has thoughts on whether the Inspire 3 solo operation is workable or if youre really giving something up there compared to having a dedicated camera op.

been on the Inspire 3 since last spring for commercial and some doc work and yeah the X9-8K files are genuinely impressive, colorists havent complained once which is honestly not something i could say about every aerial package ive brought to a DIT. the CinemaDNG workflow is a bit chunky in terms of storage but nothing unusual if youre already used to handling RAW on set.

solo operation is fine for most shots honestly, the stabilization is good enough that if youre just doing standard aerials you can fly and operate camera at the same time without it being a disaster. where you really feel the limitation is anything dynamic ? tracking a moving subject, doing a complex reveal, that kind of thing. then you want a second operator badly. but for locked-off or slow push type shots its totally manageable on your own.

the jump from Inspire 1 to 3 is not subtle. if youre losing work over image quality its probably the right call, its just a lot of money to have sitting on a single platform.

i cant speak to the Inspire 3 specifically but i know a DP who brought one onto a car commercial last year and said the main thing that suprised them was how much the directors were actually comfortable calling it a primary camera for some sequences rather than just b-roll coverage. thats kind of the whole point right, getting it taken seriously on set. the Inspire 1 never quite got there in my experience.
