gate spacing for a tight indoor track ? how close is too close

  • Members

so ive been building out a small indoor track in a warehouse we have access to on weekends and im trying to figure out how tight i can realistically make the gate spacing before it just becomes frustrating instead of fun. right now ive got about 4 meters between most gates which feels okay but a buddy of mine who races more seriously says real comp tracks push that closer to 2.5-3m in the technical sections.

the problem is our ceiling is only like 5.5 meters so i cant really do big sweeping elevation changes, most of the challenge has to come from horizontal layout. im running a 3 inch micro build for this space which helps but even then some of the tighter lines feel borderline stupid to attempt at anything above crawling speed. anyone done indoor tracks at this scale and figured out a good rhythm for gate density vs pilot skill ceiling

3 inch in a 5.5m ceiling warehouse sounds actually pretty decent honestly. ive seen some gnarly indoor tracks at local events that were way more cramped than that and they worked fine once people got dialed in. the 2.5m thing your buddy mentioned ? that's real but it also depends a lot on whether the gates are straight or offset. offset gates at 3m feel tighter than straight gates at 2m in my experience because your brain doesnt get to plan as far ahead.

one thing that helped us was making two or three of the gaps wider as like a breather section. keeps the flow from feeling like you're constantly white-knuckling it. people need somewhere to reset mentally or the whole track just feels exhausting after a few laps.

whats your gate setup, like are you using flags or actual rigid gates? asking because soft gates at that spacing are way more forgiving and actually let you push closer together without every clip ending a run. we use those foam pool noodle style DIY gates for practice and the difference in aggression level compared to hard PVC gates is noticeable
