been messing around with acro on my freestyle quad lately and got split S turns down pretty consistently on the sim. took it outside and they feel great but im starting to wonder if this is a maneuver that has actual practical use in real flying situations or if im just adding it to the repertoire because it looks sick on video.

like i get that certain moves have real utility ? a power loop clears an obstacle, a split S can change direction fast ? but is there a scenario where a split S is actually the right call or is it mostly just for freetyling aesthetics. curious what more experienced acro guys think. maybe im overthinking it and the point is just to have tools available and you use what fits.

the distinction between utility and style kind of breaks down in freestyle honestly. the split S is useful in the sense that it trains you to commit to an inverted attitude and pull through, which bleeds into other stuff like half rolls into dives and so on. if you're only ever flying rightside up you develop these weird hesitations when you suddenly need to do something aggressive. so even if the exact maneuver doesn't come up in practical situations the muscle memory of doing it clean absolutely carries over.

that said if youre asking whether youll be out on a cinematic shoot and suddenly need a split S ? no probably not. different context. in pure freestyle though its a legit linking move, you can chain it with a lot of other stuff to change altitude and direction without losing flow.

tbh i always thought it was mostly aesthetic until i started flying tighter spaces and realized being comfortable with direction reversal at speed actually matters. dropped a lot of the showboating stuff from my sim practice and started focusing on that kind of thing. but yeah in wide open air its mostly vibes lol
