so ive been doing some contract work for a couple of local farms, mostly just orthomosaic stuff and the occasional elevation model, nothing too crazy. been using DroneDeploy for about 8 months now and honestly its fine for what i do but the subscription just went up again and im starting to wonder if jumping to Pix4D makes any sense at my scale.

the thing is i dont really need the advanced multispectral processing or anything like that, its mostly RGB mapping with my M3E and occasionally some volume calculations for a grain cooperative that hired me last fall. DroneDeploy handles that stuff but some of the outputs feel a bit... baked? like i dont have a ton of control over the point cloud processing parameters and when i try to go back and reprocess something with different settings its kind of a pain.

anyone actually switched between the two and had a strong opinion either way. or is there something else i should even be looking at, ive seen people mention WebODM but im not sure if that's realistic for client deliverables

WebODM is actually really solid if you're willing to spend a bit of time setting it up on a decent machine. I ran it alongside Pix4D for about three months just to compare and for straight RGB orthomosaics the quality difference was honestly negligible in most cases. the big thing you lose is the polish and the client-facing reporting tools which DroneDeploy does really well. if your clients are just getting the files and dont care about branded reports then WebODM on a self-hosted NodeODM instance can save you a ton of money.

that said for the volume calculations specifically i'd be a little careful ? i ran into some inconsistencies with WebODM's volume tools on uneven terrain and ended up having to validate everything in CloudCompare anyway which kind of defeats the purpose

i switched from DD to Pix4D mapper about two years ago and i genuinely don't think it was worth it for agricultural stuff specifically. the control you get over GCP management and the processing options is nice but the learning curve is real and for basic farm mapping the outputs from DroneDeploy were honestly comparable. where Pix4D earns its money imo is construction and engineering projects where you're doing a lot of BIM integration or you need really precise volumetrics with manual tie points. for grain volume calcs and NDVI type stuff i think you might be paying for things you wont use
