using drones for tower inspections ? what am I missing

so ive been doing tower inspections for a cell company for about 8 months now and honestly the workflow still feels clunky. we're using a mavic 3 enterprise with the wide and tele lenses and it does the job but im starting to wonder if im leaving a lot on the table in terms of data quality. the main issue is that the clients keep asking for close-up detail on the antenna mounts and the RF cables where they connect to the combiner, and at 50 meters out with 3x tele i can get readable shots but not like... defect-level readable if that makes sense.

been thinking about the matrice 350 with the H20T or even just renting a zenmuse H30 setup for the jobs that need it but the cost is brutal. also not sure how much difference it actually makes in practice vs just flying tighter orbits and accepting the increased risk near the structure. anyone doing this regularly with a workflow that actually works well for the deliverables clients expect?

yeah the mavic 3E tele is fine for general visual but if they want to see corrosion on hardware or check torque indicators on the mounts youre basically going to need to get within 5-10 meters and thats where it gets sketchy depending on the tower type. we switched to the M350 with H20T last year and the 20x optical zoom genuinely changes what you can deliver. you can stay at a comfortable standoff distance and still pull frame grabs that show hairline cracks in the fiberglass radomes. the thermal channel is also useful for checking passive intermodulation stuff although honestly most clients dont know to ask for that yet.

the rental route makes sense if youre only doing a few a month. there are places that rent the whole payload setup for like 300-400 a day which pencils out when you're charging 800-1200 per tower. just factor in the extra time for getting familiar with the mission planning in pilot 2 if you havent used it much.

not exactly the same application but we do comms tower work adjacent stuff ? rooftop antenna arrays on buildings mostly ? and one thing that helped us a lot was switching from manual flight to templated orbits using waypoints. takes more time up front to set the mission but the repeatable angles mean clients can actually compare inspection reports month to month and flag changes. with freehand flying every inspection looks slightly different and QA gets annoying fast.
