Part 108 BVLOS Regulation Questions - Impact on Infrastructure Inspections

  • Members

With the FAA's Part 108 framework expected to finalize in 2026, I'm trying to understand the practical implications for our bridge and power line inspection program. We currently operate under individual Part 107 waivers which take months to process and limit our scalability.

Has anyone received updates on the specific weight categories and authorization levels? From what I've read, it allows drones up to 110 lbs versus the current 55 lb limit, and shifts accountability to operators rather than individual pilots.

My main question: Will existing BVLOS waivers automatically transition to Part 108 certificates, or do we need to reapply entirely? Our corridor inspections of transmission lines could become significantly more efficient if the regulatory barriers are reduced.
