multispectral cameras worth it for small farm monitoring?

  • Members

been thinking about getting into precision ag monitoring for my dads 200 acre operation, mostly corn and wheat rotation. keep seeing these multispectral camera setups but theyre pretty pricey - like 5k+ for anything decent

wondering if anyone here has experience with whether the data you get is actually actionable for smaller operations or if its more of a big farm thing. seems like a lot of the software packages are geared toward huge operations

currently just using a mavic 2 pro for visual scouting but thinking about stepping up the game

honestly for 200 acres you might be better off just walking the fields or using the regular rgb camera you already have. multispectral is great for finding issues early but on that size farm you probably know your fields pretty well already

the real value comes when you can tie it into variable rate application which gets complicated fast

i'd disagree actually, 200 acres is still a lot to scout on foot and multispectral can catch things way before you see them visually. micasense has some more affordable options now and the processing software has gotten way better in the last couple years

even just basic NDVI mapping can help you optimize fertilizer application which pays for itself pretty quick with current input costs
