neighbor called cops about my drone - am i actually breaking any laws?

  • Members

this is probably a stupid question but my neighbor called the police yesterday because i was flying my dji air 2s in my backyard. the cop was actually pretty cool about it but said he had to respond to the call. i have my part 107 license and was flying under 400 feet, not over anyone elses property, and it was during the day. neighbor is claiming i was "invading privacy" but i wasnt even pointing the camera at anything just doing some practice flights. cop said he couldnt see any violations but now im paranoid. can neighbors actually do anything legally if youre following all the faa rules

ugh neighbors can be the worst about this stuff. if youre following faa guidelines and not actually recording them or their property then theres not much they can do legally. privacy laws vary by state but just having a drone with a camera doesnt automatically mean youre violating privacy. that said some places do have local ordinances about drones so might be worth checking if your city or county has any specific rules

i had a similar situation few years back. turns out my city actually had some weird rule about not flying within 100 feet of occupied buildings which i never knew about. wasnt really enforced but gave the neighbor something to complain about. might want to check your local city website or call them directly. also maybe try talking to the neighbor first, sometimes people just dont understand what drones can actually see or do and get freaked out for no reason
