Winter drone flying season is here and I'm noticing some serious performance issues with my setup. Battery life is getting cut in half and I'm seeing some weird behavior during flight.

I know cold weather affects lithium batteries, but are there specific techniques you veterans use to maintain good flight times? I've heard about keeping batteries warm before flight, but what about during extended shooting sessions?

Also experiencing some stability issues that I didn't have in summer - is this normal? Any winter flying safety tips would be really appreciated!

Cold weather flying requires a completely different approach. Keep spare batteries in inside pockets close to your body heat, and swap them frequently. I use battery warmers for commercial shoots and always do a longer pre-flight warmup. Also watch for ice formation on props - it happens faster than you'd think.

I learned this the hard way last winter! Frost formation on wings or propellers happens when the surface temperature is below the dew point and it's under 0?C. Now I always check the temperature differential and avoid flying in high humidity cold conditions.

This is exactly why I only fly in good conditions. Too many variables to go wrong in winter weather - shortened battery life, reduced visibility, unpredictable air currents. Unless it's absolutely critical for work, I just wait for better weather. Not worth the risk to equipment or safety.
