tried doing a proper split-s yesterday and nearly binned it, what am i missing

ok so this is probably a dumb question but bear with me. been watching fpv freestyle videos forever and finally tried to learn actual named maneuvers instead of just winging it. started with the split-s because it looked like one of the easier entry points. watched probably four different tutorials.

every single attempt i either pull out way too early and it just looks like a bad half roll, or i wait too long to pull and i'm pointed straight at the ground with no altitude left to recover. i flew a 4inch on a field yesterday with maybe 80 feet of ceiling before i was uncomfortable and i burned through a battery just doing the same failed attempt over and over.

is this purely an altitude judgment thing or is there some throttle management going on that the tutorials arent really explaining well? feels like theres a step im not seeing

the throttle part is what nobody explains properly yeah. when you roll inverted you want to cut throttle almost completely right as you initiate the roll, like down to maybe 5-10%, otherwise the quad fights itself and the entry is all wobbly. then as soon as youre inverted and you start the pull you feed throttle back in progressively through the arc. if you just hold mid throttle the whole time it bucks all over the place and your pull out altitude is inconsistent because the quad isnt actually tracking a clean arc.

also 80 feet is genuinely tight for learning this, not impossible but you have very little margin for the timing to be off. i learned on a big open grass field and still wanted at least 150 feet to feel relaxed about it. maybe find somewhere you can get higher until the muscle memory is there

this took me way longer to get than i expected too, dont feel bad. the thing that finally clicked for me was doing it in a simulator first with the altitude display on so i could actually see how much height i was burning in the pull. translating that visual to real life made it less of a guess. what sim are you using if any
