betaflight filters making me crazy - soft tune feels mushy no matter what i do

so anyway ive been chasing this for like three weeks now and im at the point where i just want to throw the quad off a roof. the issue is no matter how i tune the RPM filter and the gyro lowpass stuff the quad just feels... mushy? like its not oscillating, props are balanced, motors are fine, its just got this sluggish feeling especially in roll. its not slow, the response is there but it feels like its going through mud compared to my buddy's identical-ish build.

running betaflight 4.4, 2207 motors, F7 flight controller, nothing exotic. tried backing off the filtering quite a bit, tried cranking it up, tried messing with the D term filter cutoff. the P and I feel decent but D just seems to make everything worse no matter where i set it. at this point im wondering if theres something wrong with my specific FC or if its a softmounting issue or what. gyro is softmounted from the factory on this board so idk. did a blackbox log but honestly not super confident in reading them yet so maybe thats just the answer here

post the blackbox log seriously, thats gonna tell you everything. mushy feeling with D being the problem child is almost always either too much D lowpass filtering killing your response, or actual motor noise making betaflight fight itself. if the gyro trace in blackbox looks smooth but the motor outputs look like garbage thats your answer right there.

also what are your actual filter settings, like the specific numbers. 'backed off quite a bit' doesnt really help diagnose anything lol. and what FC is it exactly, some of the cheaper F7 boards have real issues with gyro placement and noise even with softmounting

had almost this exact problem last year. turned out my softmount grommets were basically disintegrated and i hadnt noticed, looked fine visually but were totally hard. swapped them out and suddenly the tune that wasnt working started working way better. probably not your issue but worth checking if the board has been in a few crashes
